Highly sensitive and specific low-cost lab-on-a-chip system for Lyme disease diagnosis

Lyme disease is caused by the pleomorphic spirochete bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted by ticks. In Europe, there are about 85000 Lyme disease cases every year.
Current laboratory diagnostic methods lack sensitivity and specificity to detect early cases as well as late manifestations of the disease such as chronic or auto-immune-related infections. Late, delayed or inadequate treatment can lead to serious symptoms such as neuroborreliosis or arthritis, which can be disabling and difficult to treat.
HILYSENS will be a lab-on-a-chip tool that will permit a robust and automatic sample processing and detection in a single step, combined with very specific antigenic proteins and peptides that will be detected by fluorescent nanoparticles.
The marriage of both technologies is highly innovative and will offer outstanding features in terms of sensitivity and assay robustness, addressing therefore the gaps of existing assays.
